oxford modernist

a personal view of oxford’s modernist architecture

about

As the city of dreaming spires, Oxford is rightly famed for its gargoyles and gothic architecture. But lurking amongst the carved limestone is a treasure trove of concrete and brick modernist buildings – many funded by the university colleges, others by the local city and county authorities.

Mostly built in the 1960s and 1970s, I’ve attempted to capture the beauty of these buildings and to show them in context, with a few notes of my own.

Most of these buildings are located in the city centre within an easy walking distance of each other – if you’re visiting Oxford and would like ideas for an itinerary, feel free to contact me at hello@oxfordmodernist.com

I’ve added relevant links to some of the building pages; but many of the buildings on this site are listed on Blue Crow Media’s excellent Modern Oxford map – well worth buying if you’re visiting the city.

In addition, the 20th Century Society campaigns for the protection of key twentieth century architecture – including the Florey Building here in Oxford.
