Magpie Lane Annexe

Powell & Moyà (1969)

Dividing Oriel College to the west from University College to the east, Magpie Lane runs south from the High Street to the cobbles of Merton Street. At its south east corner lies a cluster of college buildings belonging not to University but to Corpus Christi College.

(The rest of Corpus is to be found diagonally opposite, south of Merton Street.)

In this block and directly across the lane from the glass boxes of Oriel’s Senior Common Room lies Powell and Hoyà’s Magpie Lane Annexe.

The Corpus annexe, comprising student accommodation, blends perfectly into its surroundings, especially around the corner in Kybalt Street where the new building dissolves into its older neighbour by careful use of local limestone facing materials.

Here’s a collection of 1969 images from the RIBApix website, showing both internal and external views.
