Douglas Murray, City Architect, 1971

Rewley Road fire station was built in 1971 and is active to this day. You can follow the crew on their Facebook page here.
The building features a number of brutalist elements (such as the wooden former imprints cast into the uprights), including the concrete tower to its rear.
Oxfordshire County Council announced in 2023 that the fire station could be redeveloped on a smaller footprint. Rewley Road is on the 20th Century Society’s watchlist for post war fire stations.
Also visible in these photos is the neighbouring Beaver House, designed by Oxford Architects’ Partnership and dating from 1972. Built to house book retailer Blackwells, the property has recently been rented out to various departments of the University.
The building has not stood the test of time well; and in 2024 planning permission was granted to demolish Beaver House to make way for Bridge Labs, a new life sciences building.
