Philip Dowson, Arup Associates (1970)

Stavertonia is the colloquial name for University College’s northern annexe, located just south of Staverton Road in Summertown, north Oxford.
Designed by Philip Dowson, the Stavertonia complex comprised four new buildings to provide student accommodation in a move that was relatively new at the time – annexes had only previously been considered by Queen’s College (with the Florey Building) and Balliol.
More recently, the “Univ North” annexe is being developed further with new buildings currently under construction.
In 2020 the college magazine, The Martlet, carried detailed articles on both new and old buildings.
Externally, I’m not sure how well these buildings have stood the test of time, but they remain an important part of Philip Dowson’s modernist legacy in Oxford.
