Wolfson College

Powell & Moyà (1974)

Wolfson College is a graduate-only college, founded in 1965. By 1974 it had moved to this new, purpose-built campus to the north east of the city overlooking the River Cherwell.

Architects Powell and Moyà have produced a low-rise campus spread over a large site; and with views across the river to the parkland beyond it slightly resembles a holiday complex… but the low-rise design is in keeping with the college’s non-hierarchical style; there is no junior, middle or senior common room here – all Wolfson members, whether staff or students have equal status.

Wolfson achieved Grade II status in 2009.

Photographing the campus from the outside is difficult beyond the entry lodge; but you can get a good idea of the architecture both inside and out in this promo video. Look out for the punt harbour…
